my giant shell...

a little piece of culture...
I have a hot steamy affair with old Chinese (and by that I mean pre-Cultural Revolution) glamour which started one hot afternoon in 2002 when I stumbled on a pictorial in my dressmaker's waiting room. The pictorial was of old Chinese ads and paintings and photographs of silent actresses. Each of them took my breath away as I turned the pages. One photographed grabbed my attention. It was of a woman lying on a beach chair in a 1930s swimsuit, and the typing underneath it described her as a famous screen siren who committed suicide at a young age, at the peak of her career. I understood her name to be Butterfly Wu.
Fast forward four years, I discovered I was greatly mistaken about the bathing suit woman's name. I watched the movie Center Stage, starring Maggie Cheung, and learned that the ill-fated actress' name wasn't Butterfly Wu, but Ruan Lingyu.
Now about the movie Center Stage. The main sountrack really grabs me. I don't know the title as I speak no Chinese. It appears in part in the beginning of the movie as a diagetic sound, as the scene shows movie extras loiter around a room. I guess it's a diagetic sound because unlike a score or soundtrack it doesn't overpower the sound of men in the scene, and given that the scene is set in 1929 it's likely issuing from a gramophone. The song appears again at the very end of the movie, accompanying the credit roll and an authentic photograph of Ruan Lingyu's corpse, this time as a full song in a much more modern version.
So here are videos of the song...I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This is a slide of Ruan Lingyu pictures. The very first one is obviously taken from Center Stage's opening title. This is the version that appears as the beginning of the movie.

And this is its modern version which appears at the end credit of the movie, performed here by Taiwanese chanteuse Tracy Huang in some event in 1991.

I very much like to know the title of the song, and if possible a bit of details regarding the original version, like the release year and performer. So if you'll be so kind...

To finish off, this is the beautifully-executed trailer of Center Stage, a biopic of Ruan Lingyu who, dubbed 'The Chinese Garbo', was a major silent screen goddess who committed suicide just a month before her 25th birthday on March 10 1935.

falling apart
Hey love.
Remember when you said Casey was lucky because he had it all?
Guess what, you have his luck now.
Your wish has been granted.
But isn't it very human to shy away from it...
You long for something. And when you have it you throw it away.
Very human.

your daddys rich, hes rich, your daddys very rich. and your mama, hot mama, so hush little baby dont you cry...
God I want to rant. You know I do. But not in front of all these...people.
Especially not that guy who actually reads me like a book, even when we're miles apart.
If it falls down on me, my love, where do I make my escape?
I'll leave you with a fraction of the lyrics from Tarkan's Verme. Translated into English.
Don't give me, don't give me a piece of your mind. Should you give me anything, let it be peace of mind.

back on the block dawg!

Woohoohoos! After Take That, Backstreet Boys, and Led Zeppelin, New Kids On The Block has jumped on the reunion bandwagon!
Omigod omigod excitement!!! Please include New Zealand? Pretty please? Pretty, pretty please?
Whoa I soo can barely wait to feel eight years old again, even if it's just for a couple of hours!
Off topic, I got my first FTVMS 323 essay done in just two days. My chosen question just all of a sudden struck me as easy to understand in the last minute, and it just flowed...I even handed it in an hour before the due time, which was so unusual of me. Normally I'd take all my time to do an essay.
Ok back to the topic. Who'll catch on the reunion bug next? ABBA?

joyful joyful, lord, we adore thee...
Happiness is sitting behind a George Clooney-old man in a Nautica jacket on the bus, inhaling his perfume (an expensive one at that).
Pleasure is seeing a super thin and stylish Japanese girl eating the biggest piece of carrot cake you've ever seen.
Joy is realizing one of the most popular hunks at school doesn't have six-packed abs.
Bliss is spontaneously giving a hug to a gorgeous guy you haven't seen in months, totally forgetting he's normally cold and you would think twice before greeting him.
Euphoria is when the said guy hugged you back and asked you to e-mail him. You send him an e-mail without expecting him to reply, and he actually replies.

Stalk me:

The picture was taken by yours truly in Northhead, Devonport, on April 21 2007 using a Nikon D70 belonging to The University of Auckland's Photography Society. As usual, the layout was coded by me and other images except the ones for fanlistings, cliques, and quizzes were created by me as well using Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Don't steal.
